Gill Instruments is part of the Gill Group of companies that include Gill Research & Development, Sensors & Controls and Instruments.  The Group is an ambitious and growing privately-owned designer and manufacturer of specialist sensors and weather instrumentation equipment.  Gill products are used in demanding and advanced technology industries around the world, including construction, motorsport, marine, aeronautical, defence, and material handling.

As part of the strategy, the Group is upskilling the operations team and has identified the need for a Materials Controller (MC) to work across the two product companies.  The MC will be responsible for developing the materials control function across the companies. The MC will manage the team, and all elements of the flow of materials from goods receipt, transactions, accuracy, scheduling and despatch.  The company is seeking an experienced MC who has previous led a team and can develop the materials management function at Gill.  This is an exciting opportunity to join the company as we transform the business and prepare for growth.

Position Summary

The position is responsible to the Director of Group Operations through the operations reporting line.  The key responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for the warehouse, stores and despatch team, develop cross-training to cover between sites.
  • Responsible for the control of Drawing Office updates, documentation, issue number management and work instruction generation

  • Maintain inventory accuracy, report, investigate and action discrepancies.

  • PI and Stock counting, establish, report, investigate and action discrepancies.

  • Work cross-function to identify and achieve cost reduction / performance improvement targets.

  • Develop and implement actions to achieve Stock Turn, Inventory Cost Reduction, Obsolescence, On Time Delivery and KPI targets.

  • Responsible for Kanbans, bulk issue and line side stock.

  • Develop, support and implement methods to improve material flow into, through and out of the business process.

  • To ensure the team are compliant when handling regulatory documentation, for example Export Controls, MSDS, REACH, CofC, DSEAR etc…

  • To ensure the team are trained and work within health and safety regulations, and develop 5S and LEAN throughout the work areas.

  • Member of the Operations Supervisory Team.

  • Undertaking relevant alternative duties as required by the Company.

Position Requirements

  • Relevant qualification in Materials Management and Control.

  • Team Leader supervisory skills.

  • Experience as a Materials Controller in a warehouse environment for a design and manufacturing business.

  • Previous user experience with inventory control and works orders software, Syspro or similar ERP/MRP system.

  • An understanding of batch, FIFO, LEAN techniques and continuous improvement.

  • Fluent with MS Office, especially Excel, and KPI reporting.
